Not Your Wasteland: Healing the Body x DVRP at Catharsis on the Mall

A Healing the Body is an installation sponsored by the Asian Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Research Project for Catharsis on the Mall:  A Vigil for Healing

The following photo essay was submitted to Lips  by artist Ashley Dequilla who is representing her project, Healing the Body.  Healing the Body is a series of a classes and workshops that uses approaches to painting and drawing the body that do not rely on the gendered gaze typical of traditional figure painting.

We are waking from the American Dream. The illusion has been shattered by the sheer depravity and devastation of the era.

Both the consumption of the environment and gender based violence continue unabated and accelerated to fit the aims of power. “Not Your Wasteland” is an abstract apocalyptic landscape that represents the desecration enacted on the earth and our bodies.

Catharsis participants were invited to take portraits in front of a projection of this painting, to represent solidarity against the oppressive forces of our time.
